Description |
Ashbel Riley of Wethersfield (1733-1794) was a ship master in the West Indies trade. Commanded brig HEPPY in 1789 for merchant John Chevenard of Hartford. In 1794 he took sloop SCRUB to the West Indies for Hezekiah and George Bull of Hartford. In 1795 took schooner CHANCE for same owners. During the Revolutionary War, he was master of privateers RANGER and SNAKE. He was the brother of Justus Riley of the COMMERCE who was in wine trade to Madeira and was captured off the coast of Africa and enslaved by the Arabs. |
